What Does a Product Design Internship at Brucira Entail?

Added 30th Oct 2020

From time to time, Brucira takes on fresh-faced, doe-eyed interns across our various verticals. Other than wanting them to experience what it’s like to work at a product design agency, we want to learn from them and with them during their internships.

Samyak joined us as a product design intern in the summer of 2020 when most of the world was in lockdown due to the Covid19 pandemic. It was a novel experience for all of us — there hadn’t been any remote interns at Brucira previously, but we were very determined to make this an enjoyable experience full of learning & fun.

Why Brucira?

Samyak reached out to our co-founder Harsh Vijay after following us for a while. He was interested in the kind of work Brucira was doing and wanted to be a part of it. So he reached out — we were impressed by his initiative and gave him a brief assignment to gauge his skills. Once he passed the test, he was in!

What does a product design intern do at Brucira?

First, he began by working on a report about his perceptions about Brucira and what he thought we could do to improve our digital presence. In his own words, “I assessed Brucira’s Dribbble profile and came up with suggestions to improve the portfolio as a whole.”

To the same extent, he began work on some shots that would be shared on Brucira’s profile. Along with static images, Samyak also worked on animated shots for our Dribbble page.

Next, he worked on the Brucira website where he combined the work & case studies sections to create a cohesive platform highlighting Brucira’s best clients & designs.

Designing lo-fi & hi-fi wireframes

One of Samyak’s major tasks was to create the lo-fi (low fidelity) wireframes for ‘Pressmate’. He worked on the wireframes for six pages and then went on to create the hi-fi (high fidelity) wireframe design for the home page. He says, “Although my design was not selected, it was a good learning experience for me.”

He also worked on designing the lo-fi wireframes for Picout and designed eight of the most important pages of the website.

Lo-fi wireframes are used very early on the design process and only have basic representations of features, functionality, and other elements. High fidelity wireframes, on the other hand, are used to capture the look and feel of a product in its advanced stages.

Collaborating with other interns

At Brucira, we believe in working together without stepping on each other’s toes. Samyak collaborated with Pradnyesh, our then marketing intern and current associate marketing manager, to ideate about Brucira’s new ‘About Us’ page.

Samyak’s Thoughts

“This internship has been a fundamental force in my growth as a designer.”

At Brucira, I:

  • Worked with a team of designers and learned the correct process of approaching a design problem.
  • Pushed myself beyond my boundaries to achieve the results needed.
  • Learned how to receive feedback and incorporate the same into my designs.
  • Understood more about the practicality of design and the need for the same. For instance, the importance of strategically placing CTAs on the webpage to increase conversions.
  • Was exposed to several great visual designs that have been very inspiring.

Apart from the technical knowledge I gained, I learned how to work in a team and became a better person because of it.

His thoughts on Brucira

“Brucira is a great design agency to work with and one of the few places where good design is highly revered.”

Samyak also told us that he felt that we needed to showcase the talent at Brucira and what we can and have achieved through design & illustration better. He also suggested that Brucira take the audience through the way we transform a brand and how we incorporate beauty into useful design.

At Brucira, we deeply value the contributions of all our team members — no matter their rank or position. We’re glad that our efforts to create a warm, productive, and encouraging space to work have been appreciated and we will continue along the same path.

Taking Samyak’s feedback into account, we’ll be sharing more stories about the what goes on at Brucira — intern tales, projects we’re working on, new products we’re working on refining (hint: one of them is ruttl!), and more, coming your way soon!

We’re thankful to Samyak for sharing his thoughts! This post has been pieced together from his feedback & report about his experience at Brucira. It has been edited for brevity, levity, and clarity.

This is the second post in our series sharing our interns’ experience at Brucira. Read about Rajat’s experience as a front-end development intern.
